Shorter University bans gay employees. Watch how in ten years people will look back to this and think WHAT THE F WAS WRONG WITH THEIR BRAINS
starts apreading the news. I’m leaving today. New York, New York. I’ll be back I swear.
An old man walked across the beach until he came across a young boy throwing something into the breaking waves. Upon closer inspection, the old man could see that the boy was tossing stranded starfish from the sandy beach, back into the ocean.
“What are you doing, young man?” He asked.
“If the starfish are still on the beach when the sun rises, they will die,” the boy answered.
“That is ridiculous. There are thousands of miles of beach and millions of starfish. It doesn’t matter how many you throw in; you can’t make a difference.”“It matters to this one,” the boy said as he threw another starfish into the waves.
I love this movie. I love this speech. There’s a really interesting part in his autobiography where Chaplin talks about hearing stories of people’s varied reactions to his film. Several theater owners reported audience members who threw things at the screen shouting “Communist!” The film was nominated for an Academy Award even thought it alienated and confused much of his audience. I think it’s perfect that his first full blown ‘talkie’ concludes with such a powerful speech given directly to the audience. Here someone has added the soundtrack from Inception and it actually kind of works.
If you haven’t seen The Great Dictator: see it. This is just one of many stand-out scenes. Just this week Criterion released an awesome edition of it on DVD/Blu Ray. It even includes a fascinating documentary about the parallel lives of Adolf Hitler and Charlie Chaplin called The Tramp and the Dictator.
Lights Out: The barber’s speech from Charlie Chaplin’s The Great Dictator versus Hans Zimmer’s “Time” from the Inception OST.

Wow. It’s odd how the first time I actually hear the voice of a man who I thought speechless left me -a man who doesn’t shut up about anything- without words instead.
